Although Benson won't be ranked as a Top-25 fantasy option versus the 49ers' stout defense this week, he figures to retain RB2 potential from Week 2 on.

"We emphasize the run every week." Cedric Benson looked fine in Week 1; he just had no room to run against the 49ers' shut-down front seven. With James Starks doubtful for Thursday night, Benson will carry the load against the Bears.

Benson's 20 carries were the most by a Green Bay back since James Starks had 20+ in each of the 2010 NFC playoff games. In a promising sing for fantasy value, Benson also ran 21 pass routes. Alex Green, who played just two snaps, can dropped in all formats. We fully expect Benson to remain the lead dog when Starks returns, perhaps in Week 3.

oach Mike McCarthy confirms the Packers will go with a "hot hand" approach at running back in the absence of Cedric Benson, with Alex Green getting the "first crack" at carries.
According to McCarthy, Green is "further ahead" than James Starks, who missed four weeks with turf toe before being a healthy scratch in Week 5. Green is clearly the back to add in fantasy leagues, but McCarthy has hinted each of Green, Starks and Brandon Saine will get carries. If possible, it's a situation to avoid until things are allowed to shake out over the next 1-2 weeks.

Packers assigned RB Cedric Benson (foot) the "designated for return" tag on injured reserve.

Benson can't resume practicing for six weeks, and won't be eligible to return until Week 14. Coach Mike McCarthy is optimistic he'll play again this season, however, saying Benson is a "true pro," and that he can "see him being one of those guys who plays the last four weeks." McCarthy also confirmed the Packers will ride a "hot hand" approach in Benson's absence, with Alex Green getting the "first crack" at carries.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that Alex Green will be the team's lead running back moving forward.

With Cedric Benson (foot, Lisfranc) on injured reserve designated for return and Brandon Saine (torn ACL) out for the remainder of the season, Green is going to be Green Bay's starting running back moving forward. Green is coming off a 2011 torn ACL of his own, but he is "already past the rep count" and there is "no reason to think he can't carry a full load." He was clearly the feature back on Sunday night in Houston, and he'll be a weekly RB2/flex play for the foreseeable future.

Coach Mike McCarthy suggested that RB Alex Green will continue to "carry a full load" in the Packers' backfield.

"I see the games as we move forward reflecting the game we just played. That will be our approach," said McCarthy. "I was very pleased with Alex Green ... I mean, I have no reason to think that he can't carry a full load." McCarthy suggested that James Starks' five garbage-time runs were simply an opportunity to get him ready in case Green goes down with an injury. There's no committee attack here, though Green could lose goal-line looks to John Kuhn.

Packers RB Alex Green (shoulder) was limited again in Thursday's practice.

Green is fully expected to start at St. Louis, and coach Mike McCarthy suggested he will continue to get a feature back's workload. Rotoworld ranks Green 24th among fantasy backs against a defense that shut down Reggie Bush a week ago.
